چکیده

The mechanical work on the lung required during spontaneous breathing with positive end-expiratory pres sure (PEEP) was compared with different methods of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in nine young healthy athletes (surfers) at levels of 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm H20. At the level of 20 cm H20, PEEP increased the mean total work per minute by 116 per cent and the total work per liter by 121 percent. The percent increase rose linearly with the level of PEEP. In contrast, with methods of CPAP that maintained the

Sudden Complete Versus Gradual Weaning from Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure in Preterm Neonates: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is used as respiratory support in preterm neonates; however, the best weaning method has not yet been determined. In this study, we compared sudden complete and gradual weaning from nasal CPAP (NCPAP) in preterm newborns. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 62 prete...

Effects of the components of positive airway pressure on work of breathing during bronchospasm

INTRODUCTION Partial assist ventilation reduces work of breathing in patients with bronchospasm; however, it is not clear which components of the ventilatory cycle contribute to this process. Theoretically, expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP), by reducing expiratory breaking, may be as important as inspiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP) in reducing work of breathing during acute bro...

A simple and inexpensive device for administration of continuous positive airway pressure breathing.

A simple system for administration of continuous positive airway pressure breathing uses a corrugated hose in the modified Mapleson D system for anaesthesia. The only mechanical component of the system is a spring-loaded valve for positive end expiratory pressure.

Effects of continuous positive airway pressure on respiratory mechanics and breathing pattern in healthy individuals

Introduction Variable levels of positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) are widely used during mechanical ventilation or during spontaneous breathing for acute or chronic lung diseases. In this study, respiratory indirect plethysmography (RIP), electromyography (EMG) of the transversus abdominis and scalene muscles and indirect calorimetry are used to achieve an integrated picture of the change...

Effect of Bubble and Ventilator-derived Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on the Management of Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Premature Neonates

Background: In this study, we aimed to compare ventilator-derived and bubble continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Vali-e-Asr Hospital, Birjand, Iran, in 2014. Methods: This cohort study was conducted among 68 patients assigned into two groups. The neonates in group A (32 infants) were treated with b...
